Even more awesome songs from TV commercials

I usually DVR TV shows so I can fast-forward through the commercials. But every once in awhile an interesting ad catches my eye ... or my ear.

1. Boys Wanna Be Her by Peaches
Subaru Forester, February 2011

[YouTube link]
Boys Wanna Be HerBoys Wanna Be Her
This ad caught my eye and my ear! Using the tag line "Sexy Comes Standard," Subaru of Canada populated this 2011 Forester commercial with sexy sumo wrestlers, lampooning recent Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue tie-ins by Nissan and Lexus. "Boys Wanna Be Her" provides the spicy musical accompaniment.

2. Snow Day by Matt Pond PA
Starbucks, November 2010

[YouTube link]
Snow Day - Winter SongsSnow Day
Matt Pond PA has been making music for over a decade now, but "Snow Day" may be their biggest break yet. The track was featured in Starbucks commercials for the company's "Buy one holiday drink, get one free" promotion in 2010. The song's acoustic backdrop and use of lush strings make it a nice whimsical holiday tune.

3. Dancing With Myself by Nouvelle Vague
Joe Fresh, November 2010

[YouTube link]
Dancing With Myself - Bande a PartDancing With Myself
"Dancing With Myself" was first released by the band Generation X in 1980, but Billy Idol's 1981 version was the most memorable.

Nouvelle Vague remade the song in 2006 and, in 2009, the TV show Glee did a cover based on the Nouvelle Vague version.

4. Beginnings by Capital Cities
Shaw, September 2010

[YouTube link]
Beginnings - Beginnings - SingleBeginnings
Capital Cities' core members Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian began collaborating in 2008 as composers of music for advertising. Some of the discarded commercial demos inspired the songs on the band's debut album.

"Beginnings" was written specifically for this Shaw Communications ad. It launched the Canadian cable giant's Together Is Amazing charity campaign.

5. Short Skirt/Long Jacket by Cake
Apple, September 2010

[YouTube link]
Short Skirt, Long Jacket - Cake: B-Sides and RaritiesShort Skirt/Long Jacket
Apple introduced its 6th generation iPod Nano with an ad featuring "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" by Sacramento-based band, Cake.

The song must have struck a chord with the producers of NBC's Chuck, because it can also be heard as the TV show's theme song.

6. Backyard by Jeen O'Brien
Shaw, September 2010

[YouTube link]
Backyard - Jeen O'Brien
This fantastic song from Toronto artist Jeen O'Brien really tugs at the old heartstrings, making it an excellent choice for this Fill the Food Banks ad.

During the campaign, Shaw Communications and partner Campbell Canada matched food bank donations of 650,000 pounds of food, bringing the final total to 2,612,633 lbs of food.

7. Come On Come On by Goldrush
Alexander Keith's, August 2010

[YouTube link]
Come On Come On - OzonaCome On Come On
Goldrush is a rock band from Oxfordshire, England whose music has been compared to Nick Drake, The Byrds, The Flaming Lips and Grandaddy.

"Come On Come On" is from their 2005 album, Ozona, which was named after the town of Ozona, Texas where the band once broke down on tour.

8. You Always Make Me Smile by Kyle Andrews
Holiday Inn, April 2010

[YouTube link]
You Always Make Me Smile
As part of a rebranding effort, Holiday Inn aired a series of Stay You ads in 2010, each of them featuring Kyle Andrews' charming song.

The official music video for "You Always Make Me Smile" was filmed in Provo, UT in July 2010. It featured 4,000 people having a gigantic water balloon fight with 120,000 balloons (all biodegradable, filled with non-potable irrigation water)!

9. Light of the Morning by Band of Skulls
Ford Mustang, April 2010

[YouTube link]
Light of the Morning - Baby Darling Doll Face HoneyLight of the Morning
Band of Skulls is a garage rock band from Southampton, England. In this ad, the bluesy song lurches to life as the new Mustang is shown cruising through various early-morning empty city scenes. Then, both car and band pick up steam as the "you gotta go, you gotta go" refrain kicks in.

10. Lightning Don't Strike Twice by Emilie Mover
Joe Fresh, April 2010

[YouTube link]
Listen to the whole song.

This ad was choreographed by Michael Rooney (Mickey Rooney's son) and features the singing talents of Emilie Mover.

The Canadian indie artist is no stranger to TV commercials. Her "Ordinary Day" was used in a Bounce commercial, "Made for Each Other" was featured in a McDonald's McMini ad, and her cover of the Smokey Robinson classic, "I Second That Emotion," appeared in a Honey Nut Cheerios ad.

11. I'm With You by The Stills
Alexander Keith's, March 2010

[YouTube link]
I'm With You - Oceans Will RiseI'm With You
The Stills is a Canadian rock band from Montreal, Quebec. "I'm With You" is from their album "Oceans Will Rise," which won a Juno Award for Best Alternative Album of the Year in 2009.

12. How You Like Me Now by The Heavy
Kia Sorento, January 2010

[YouTube link]
How You Like Me Now - The House That Dirt BuiltHow You Like Me Now
The stars of this Kia Sorento 2010 Super Bowl commercial are Sock Monkey, Muno (from Yo Gabba Gabba), and friends Robot, Teddy and Mr. X. Check out the sock monkey's badass tattoo!

The awesome song comes from The Heavy, an indie rock band who claim to be from Noid, England, allegedly a small hamlet near Bath. However, no such place appears to exist.
